Gainful

Pyramid Builder

Join a team of twenty to move one limestone block a little closer to a finished pyramid. Bread and beer at midday. The main benefit is belonging.

Rope team and a limestone blockc. 2600 – 2500 BC

About the role

The pyramids were built by teams of paid workers, many of them farmers who came during the flood season, when their fields were underwater. They ate well, took pride in the work and painted their team names on the stones.

On the Giza Plateau Replica, you'll join the rope team assigned to block 2,301. Together, you'll haul it up a ramp on a wooden sledge while someone pours water to keep it moving. It will take most of the season. The pyramid will be finished either way. Your name will be on the block.

What you'll do

  • Haul your team's block up the ramp on a wooden sledge, on the count.
  • Take turns pouring water on the sand ahead of the sledge.
  • Keep the ropes coiled and the ramp clear at the end of each day.
  • Sing the hauling song with conviction, even if you don't know the words.
  • Paint your team's name on the block when it's set in place.

What we're looking for

  • Strong arms and a good grip.
  • A team player, literally.
  • Comfort working in the sun.
  • Good rhythm. The hauling song matters.

Perks

  • Bread and beer
At midday, as was customary. The beer is mild.
  • A linen headcloth
Essential on the plateau. Issued on day one.
  • Your team name in paint
On the block, forever. Ours is “Friends of Khufu”.
